Forty-five years ago, a group of concerned citizens launched what is now known as Communities in Schools (CIS) in the basement of an Atlanta department store. Today, CIS has expanded across the country and serves over 1.5 million children. Their program goes into some of Atlanta’s lowest performing schools and surrounds children with community support in order to help them succeed and stay in school.
